Dominate With The Driver

If you’re serious about chopping stokes off your golf handicap, you must learn to dominate with the driver. This means learning to hit drives that are both accurate and long. Drives like these put you in great position to hit more greens in regulation. The more greens you hit in regulation the better your chances of carding pars and birdies—the keys to breaking 80 consistently. If you want to dominate with the driver, work on the golf tips described below:

Start With The Basics

Players with high golf handicaps often ignore the basics at address, costing themselves yards. You want to setup so that swinging your driver hard, fast, and accurately is almost automatic.  Start with your spine tilt. Tilt your shoulders so that the back shoulder is slightly lower than the front. Position the ball forward of center. Add some knee flex.  And settle your weight over your shoelaces. Also, make sure everything’s square and parallel left of the target line. Tee the ball slightly higher for more distance, a golf tip we stress in golf lessons.

Find The Right Driver

Buying a driver off the rack may not be the best approach. In fact, the wrong driver could cost you as much as 20-30 yards off the tee.  If you’re going to max out your distance from the tee box, you must use a driver that’s right for you. That means finding a club that fits your build and your swing. A better approach, we tell students in golf lessons is to buy a driver customized specifically to their needs—a club with the right shaft flex, weight distribution and clubface angle.  This club gives you the best chance of achieving an on-plane swing.

Add Some Speed

Driving with power, we tell students in golf lessons, is all about adding clubhead speed and enlarging your swing arc while still staying in control. The key to doing this is to shifting your weight properly as you go back. You want to shift your weight to the front and inside portion of your right instep (left instep for lefties). You should feel as if you’re turning on your back leg. Then make a full wide turn. To max out your turn, picture yourself moving your right shoulder behind your right ear. This gives you a stronger rotation, keeps your spine angle intact, and creates a wide swing arc.
