Drill: How to Stop Fat Contact

If your swing is too steep, you’ll hit it fat or slice it right. To hit it long and straight, you must swing the club around your body. To do this, you need to keep your elbows level at the top of your swing. The following drill will train you to keep your swing on plane.

Take the club back and find your position at the top. Then, have a friend grab another club from your bag—a driver or 3-wood—and try to lay it over your arms. If your elbows aren’t level, the club won’t be straight.

Use this drill to get your club back on plane. Practice it until you’ve ingrained the feel of the correct position.
