Playing Darts Improves Pitching Accuracy

This is the fourth in our series of practice games. They make practicing more fun. If it’s more fun, you’ll put more time into perfecting your skills:

Hitting pinpoint pitches turns three strokes into two. But to hit these types of pitches, you need to increase distance control. Playing Darts helps you master distance control with your irons.

Find a short-game area where you can hit 9 random shots from 30 yards out. Make three of these shots easy (good lie/little or no forced carry); three moderately hard (a lofted pitch with some green to work with); and three quite hard (such as a downhill lie in the rough).

Score each shot using the following system:

• Hole out (5 points)
• Ball within one club length (3 points)
• Ball within two club lengths (2 points)
• Ball within three club lengths (1 point)

Set a winning score that’s realistic. Then swing away. Try to set your personal score record each time out.
