Many golfers swing hard off the tee but the ball doesn’t seem to go very far. One reason you’re not maxing out drives could be that you fail to shift your weight to your forward leg at the right time. As a result, you fail to max out your available swing speed, short-circuiting power. If this sounds like you, the drill described below may help.
Below are five keys to this drill:
- Set up with equal weight on your legs
- Swing back, exaggerating your weight shift
- Allow your front foot to come off the ground
- Drive off the inside of your back foot
- Swing aggressively through the ball
To maximize swing speed, you must feel the correct order of movements in your swing. The drill below is a proven, time-tested drill designed to help you ingrain the feeling of the correct order of movements in your swing.
Set up with your weight distributed equally between both feet and your heels and toes. Now, swing back. Exaggerate your weight shift. You want to feel as if you’re pushing off with your front foot.
As you swing back, allow your front foot to come off the ground and move a few inches closer to your back foot. Your weight should be all the way back by the time your weight reaches waist high in your backswing.
Drive off your back foot just before you transition to your downswing and then plant your left foot ahead of the ball. Swing aggressively through the ball. You should feel a whip-like sensation as you transition to impact.
Practice this drill the next time you go to the range. It will ingrain what the correct movements of a good golf swing feel like. It also maximizes your downswing transition and increases clubhead speed, resulting in more yards off the tee.
