Controlling your pitches is one of the keys to breaking 80. If you can stop your pitches within 8 feet of the cup, you’ll boost your chances of shooting low scores. You’ll also chop strokes off your golf handicap.
To stop your pitches where you want, you must to be able to control spin and loft. But if you think that ball position is the key to controlling spin and loft on your pitches, you’re wrong. And cold be costing you strokes.
Savvy players use their swing’s finish to get their pitches to stop or run. Holding the clubface open or allowing it to close are the keys to getting pitches to run or stop.
• To get the ball to hit and stop, hold the clubface open through impact and stop your swing waist high. To do this, focus on keeping the palm of your right hand and the clubface up. That way they both face up at the finish. This gets the ball to go higher and land softly.
• To get the ball to hit and roll out, stop your swing waist high but allow the club-face to close through impact, as if you were making a full swing. To do this, focus on getting the palm of your left hand and the clubface facing the target when at the finish. This gets the ball to come off the clubface at a lower trajectory. It will then roll forward when it hits.
Match the finish to the situation and you’ll be able to control the spin and loft of your pitches. That can cut strokes from your scores.
If you want to break 80 with consistency, learn to control your pitches by matching your swing’s finish to the situation. You’ll boost your chances of one-putting and cut strokes from your scores.
