Weekend golfers have different warm-up routines. Some stretch a little and swing a couple of clubs. Others hit balls at the practice range. Then there are those who visit the putting green. To play your best you should do all three—even if it means getting to the course early. A good warm-up routine doesn’t just get you loose physically, it also builds self-confidence—a key determinant of how you’ll play that day.
Below are five keys to a confidence building warm up routine:
- Stretch before you come to the course
- Visit the putting green first
- Hit some chips around the green
- Hit balls with your favorite club
- Relax and visualize your best shots
You can save time by stretching before leaving for the course. Try get to the course early, which lets you take care of business before you play. Visit the pro shop, go to the bathroom, change your shoes, and so on. Do everything in a relaxed, leisurely way, which will set the pace for play that day. You don’t want to feel rushed on the first tee.
Next, stop by the putting green. Putting is over 40 percent of the game, so make sure you get a good feel for your stroke and how the greens are playing that day. This also helps start the day off with a smooth deliberate tempo. Hit both short and long putts.
Also, spend a few minutes hitting chips from just off the green. Try to determine the hardness of the greens and how fast the ball will roll on the green. Spending 10 minutes on chipping is sufficient.
Next, head to the practice range. Take a light grip to relieve any tension and some deep breadths to relax first. Then hit some balls with your favorite club. It’s usually the club you hit best. This will help you build rhythm in your swing. When hitting, use a three quarter-swing to re-familiarize yourself with crisp contact. Having completed your warm-up routine, you’re ready to play.
