Hitting the fairway with your drive is the ideal way to start a hole because it keeps you out of trouble. Staying out of trouble off the tee helps you break 80. But even the best drivers in the golf world land in the rough now and then. Getting out of the rough successfully depends on your skill with a variety of clubs. Below is a drill to help you master escaping the rough with three different clubs.
The Right Club Drill
When you’re in the rough, you are sometimes blocked by a tree in your way. Sometimes you need to go over it. Other times you must go under it.
Find a spot where there is some significant rough and some trees. Set yourself up in a situation where you have to hit over a tree. Once you found the right spot, take six balls and your pitching wedge or a higher degree lofted wedge. Set up behind the tree. Now work on hitting those six balls over the tree. Don’t worry about distance.
Next, focus on keeping the balls below the tree’s branches. Use a lower lofted club and make a half swing. This combination will keep the ball low to the ground, which should give you good distance. Now find a spot where there is just rough. Take a fairway wood or a hybrid and hit out of the rough. Aim for a spot for your next shot.
Practicing this drill will help you master getting out of the rough using three different clubs. Mastering these three clubs from the rough will help you break 80 and shave strokes from your golf handicap.
