6 Simple Tips to Shape Your Shots That Separate “Players” From Duffers…

What type of golfer are you?

Many weekend golfers are average golfers.

On a good day, they can break 100.

Other golfers are good golfers.

They shoot in the 90s consistently or 80s.

Then there are the “players.”

These players play smart golf and can meet almost any golf challenge that they face.

If you’re serious about improving your game, work hard at becoming a player.

Players attack courses with a vengeance—and they usually beat them.

In other words, players dominate courses.

The key to dominating courses is mastering a boatload of shots that can salvage bad situations.

Six of these shots are below.

Ingrain them to dominate courses near you.

1) Punch up your tee

Many players use a tee on mid-length par 3s.

But you can “cheat” a little here and hit the grass in the tee box with the back of your club.

That creates a slightly raised area of grass that can serve as a tee.

Don’t worry, it’s legal.

Using the grass reminds you to hit down on the ball and compress it.

It also makes it easier to control trajectory and distances.

2) Hitting the high flop shot

Punching a flop shot over a bunker to a tight pin is a challenge.

But true players can beat this challenge.

They hit a “big hinger” to do it.

The key is to start with the ball forward in your stance and your hands slightly back.

Then make a big hinge with your wrists and keep your hands close to your core as you come through.

Mastering this shot takes practice.

But it’s a big stroke saver on tight pins.

3) Beating the fried egg

On sunken and fried egg lies in bunkers, you must get the club deep and underneath the ball.

That creates a hill of sand that pushes the ball up and out of the bunker.

Doing this requires a steep angle of attack.

The deeper the lie, the harder you need to hit the sand.

To beat this lie, take a steep swing that plows into the sand and stays there.

Mastering this shot, as with the high flop, takes practice.

4) Hitting the high bomb

Do you shape your shots off the tee?

Players do all the time.

One shot they master is the high bomb.

To do it, tee the ball higher and play it forward in your stance.

Now tilt your shoulders away from the target and swing away.

Keep your head behind the ball all the way through impact.

Master this shot and the low cutter (see below) and you’ll have two highly useful shots off-the-tee.

5) Slapping the low cutter

This shot has a mid-to-low trajectory and some fade-spin to it.

The fade-spin helps you hold the fairway when the ball hits.

Play the ball a little back in your stance with a lower tee.

Also, use less tilt and keep your head above the ball at impact.

This shot is a good option on fairways.

It’s also great when you want to control your driving distances.

6) Hit down on hybrids

Hybrids are great clubs.

But not every golfer hits them well.

Savvy players master hybrids.

Hybrids are designed to be hit like middle irons.

So the key to hitting them well is to hit down on the ball and create a divot after you collide with the ball—just like you would if you were hitting a 7-iron.

Hybrids are especially useful from hairy lies in the rough.

Savvy players master these six shots.

Not all pros teach them in their golf lessons, but all six shots come in handy when in trouble.

They’ll also help you cut strokes from both your scores and your golf handicap.

Those are never bad things.
