Don’t “Spill” Your Chips

If you find yourself stubbing your chips a lot, you may have the “yips.” That’s right. You may have the yips. They are not confined to just putting. The yips can strike any time any place and with any club. The drill below helps eliminate the yips from chipping.

Test Tube Drill

Imagine there’s a test tube full of water attached to you chipping club’s shaft. Play the ball back in your stance and shift your weight forward. Now swing your arms back and through. Let the acceleration of your arms bring the club though the ball. Don’t try to add acceleration by flipping your hands. Let your arms control the motion. If you don’t correctly you won’t spill any of the water in the imaginary test tube.

Try this drill next time you’re on the practice green. Eliminating the yips when chipping will save you strokes and set you up for a lot of highly makeable putts.
