Spinning It From The Fairway

Golfers are always looking for an edge. Learning to spin the ball from the fairway provides the edge many golfers are looking for. It lets you hit approach shots that stop dead on the green instead of rolling off either into a bunker or the junk that surrounds many greens. Spinning the ball from the fairway takes your game to another level. And it’s not hard to learn. All it takes is some clubhead speed, precise contact, and practice.

Below are 5 keys to the shot:

Play the ball back of center

  1. Use a firmer grip than normal
  2. Make an aggressive move down
  3. Keep your head still
  4. Pinch the ball against the grass

The ball needs to be sitting up in the fairway to spin it. You want a lie where there’s little or no grass between the clubface and the ball at impact. Use a wedge with very little bounce. That avoids catching any turf at impact.

Take your normal stance for the intended shot, but play the ball just back of center to encourage a descending blow. Also, take a little bit firmer grip of the club. You’re not going to need a lot of wrist action for the shot.

At the top of your swing make an aggressive move down to the ball. Keep your head still until you feel your arms pass your hips. Ideally, you want to pinch the ball against the grass. To do that, you’re hands must stay ahead of the clubhead.

Spinning the ball from the fairway takes practice. But it can take your game to another level. Getting the ball to stop dead on the green (or even back up a bit) instead of rolling off the green and into trouble saves a ton of strokes.
