Head Cover Behind Ball Drill

Mastering bunker play is critical to breaking 80. That’s why you can’t afford to mis-hit bunker shots.  The extra strokes generated by a mis-hit can ruin your score. The head cover behind ball drill below helps you master bunker play. It teaches you to hit greenside bunker shots where the bunker is deep, the lie slightly downhill, and the green small and fast.

Drop a ball in a deep greenside bunker. Now place a head cover one foot behind the ball. Use a basic bunker setup and swing somewhat harder than usual. Take the club back without hitting the head cover. To do this, you have to hinge your wrist early and swing your arms up instead of around your body. This creates a steep angle of attack.

Hit several shots using the head cover.  Then remove it and hit several more shots.  Alternate like this throughout the length of your practice session.  This drill teaches  you to hit closer to the ball, which weekend golfers often fail to do.
