Master Your Golf Driver Swing

Tempo Timer Drill

Ideally, the tempo of your swing should always stay the same. But with longer irons and woods, weekend golfers tend to speed up their swings. They feel they need to swing harder to hit the ball farther. But that throws your swing out of sync.

The drill below improves swing tempo—especially with your irons:

 5-Ball Tempo Drill

Line up five balls in a row. Begin with a smooth chip swing. Increase the length of each swing until your tempo feels the same for each ball or the full swing seems to take longer that the shorter swing. You may also want to count “1,2,3” as you swing at various lengths. Time yourself so each swing starts at 1 and ends at 3.

This drill improves your swing tempo. That will increase consistency and control. But you have to practice it to get the full benefit.
