Hitting Crisp Irons From Tight Lies

Excessive hand action on tight lies often leads to fat and thin shots. So the key to hitting crisp irons from tight lies is to keep hand action to a minimum. To do that, you need to lead with your left hand. This David Ledbetter drill teaches you how to do this.

Set up to the ball with your 7-iron. Lean the shaft forward until the clubface is at the po-sition you want it to be when it strikes the ball. Hold that position. Now move your right hand further down the shaft to a point just past the grip. Hold that point with the thumb and index finger of your right hand. Keep your left hand in its normal position. Take some practice swings this way.

In taking the practice swings, you’ll get the feeling that the left hand is pulling the club down to the ball. That’s the feeling you want to memorize and use to hit crisp irons from tight lies.
