Learn To Hold The Line

We tend to get away from the basics over time. Even the best players do it. So from time to time, you should review the basics, like how to grip a putter. In putting, things like grip pressure and alignment can easily pull your putt off track.

Here’s a drill that teaches you to hold the line:

Find a flat surface on a putting green, stick a tee in the ground, and then stroke some four-footers to the tee. Now with a marker draw a straight line around the ball. Aim directly at the tee at address and try to roll putts at the tee without the line wobbling.

The drill works for two reasons. First, it’s easier hitting something sticking out of the ground than dropping it in a hole. Second, it’s hard to stroke the ball without the line wobbling. It takes a square putter face to do it. That’s one of keys to great putting.
