Fixing Your Approach Angle

Fixing Your Approach Angle

Some golfers try to lift the ball in the air when hitting an iron instead of letting the club’s loft do the work. This destroys the approach angle on your shot. The drill described below corrects this swing fault.

 The Towel Drill

Go to the driving range and find an area where you can hit your irons from the grass. Drop a ball down on a good lie. Then place a towel about 5 inches behind the ball. Now take your 5-iron and hit shots with it. If you hit the towel, you’re either failing to maintain good club lag on the way down. Or, you’re not shifting your weight from your back foot to your front foot in the downswing.

Adjust the towel to your club selection. Move it closer to the ball and stack it taller for short irons. Move it farther away and shorter for your longer irons. The towel drill helps you create the good flat wrist necessary at impact to hit crisp iron shots.
