This “Preflight Checklist” Straightens (and Lengthens) Your Drives

Hitting longer, straighter drives isn’t about swinging harder. It’s about swinging the club correctly with good tempo and rhythm.

Your swing is like a chain reaction. One move naturally leads to another.

That makes the first few moves in the swing critical.

The quality of the first few moves depends on your setup.

If it’s correct, chances are good you’ll make a good swing.

Savvy golfers create a preflight checklist to make sure they get the setup correct.

Below are 7 keys to your preflight checklist.

1. Shaft is an extension of your front arm
2. Grip is neutral with two knuckles showing
3. Heels are approximately shoulder width apart
4. Knees are comfortably flexed
5. Upper body bends from the waist
6. Ball is at the correct height and positioned forward
7. Chin is up and away from your chest

Your setup, on the other hand, is the key to longer, straighter drives. It starts with good posture.

To achieve good posture, do the following:

• Make sure your driver’s shaft is in an extension of your front arm, your feet are approximately shoulder width apart, and your grip is neutral. You have a neutral grip when you can see two knuckles on each hand.

• Also, make sure your feet your knees are comfortably bent and the ball is posi-tioned forward in your stance. Ideally, you want the ball in line with your armpits or inline with the inside of your front heel. You’ll also want the ball’s equator just above the top edge of your club—whether you’re using a driver, 3-wood, or 5-wood.

• In addition, make sure your upper body is bent forward from your waist, and your chin is up and away from your chest. Turning your head slightly to the right be-fore starting your swing encourages you to stay behind the ball.

To generate power in your swing, you must allow your weight to shift backwards and for-wards in harmony with your swing. If your upper body coil and weight shift are both correct, your natural movement is a lateral one onto the front foot. You’ll hit a long straight drive.

These points should be on your pre-flight checklist. Having gone through the checklist, you can start your swing with confidence.
